Identify: Lemonade (2009) by Brad Hansen

I really like rotoscoped animation with wobbly lines because it seems less polished and natural than other kinds of animation. I stumbled upon 'Lemonade' on Youtube which is a rotoscoped animation (done digitally) about two kids living opposite to each other who have the same idea to sell lemonade in front of their houses. Hansen explores self-centeredness and its consequences to put forth the idea that it is more effective working together to reach the same goal. The choice of sounds adds humour to the rivalry between the two characters which allows Hansen to bring the point across in a light-hearted manner.

One of the things that I learnt from this animation is the effective use variations camera angles to communicate a message. Most of the shots used in this animation are cutaway shots. Cutaway shots are used throughout the animation to show similarities and differences between the two characters. For instance, both characters undergo the same process of setting up their own lemonade stalls but their different charcteristics can be identified through movements and body language. This type of shots also enables audience to easily follow the fight scenes which is the funniest part of the animation.
